Introduction

It is tremendously true that most of students study English in private academy. Some people say that the private English academy makes students do not study in school. The other people, however, agree with the private English academy. Therefore, I survey about the experience of students who major in English education in Chongshin University to know the efficiency of private English education.

The cognition of private English education

First of all, I ask to students about the cognition of private English academy  It has 4 choices: totally agree, it is necessary to students who have some problems with their study, It could be necessary but I don’t want to, and totally disagree. All of students answer that ‘It is necessary to students who have some problems with their study’. Through this question, many of students do not have any negative awareness about private English academy. They think that it could be necessary for some students.

Experience in private English education.

9 students answer the survey. Every student answered that they have an experience in private academy. Then, I ask them ‘when did you first go to the private English academy?’ Five students answer that they went there when they were middle school students, and three of them answer that they went there when they were elementary school students. There were many reasons that they chose the academy. Most of students answer that they went to the academy to improve English ability. The others answer: mom’s recommendation, all the other students did that.

Effectiveness of private English education

Then, I asked to students whether the private academy is helpful to students or not. There are 5 scores and the higher number means that it is more efficient. 6 students answer score 4, and 2 students answer score 5. All of students have experience in private English academy and most of them think that it was helpful to study English. One person, however, answers that it was not helpful. Because it was not useful in real situation.

Which contents that private English academy emphasizes?

4 people answer that the academy emphasized reading and listening section based on grammatical method. The others answer that the academy emphasized pre-learning or vocabularies. Then, I ask them which skill is the most important in the academy. The four skills in English: Reading, Listening, Writing, and Speaking. Five students answer the most important skill is reading, and four students answer that listening part is important. However, in academy they do not study about writing and speaking much ,  and they think the two skills less important.

Conclusion

Overall, the survey revealed some topics that the private academy could be helpful to students. In general, the students think that the academy is necessary to students who have some troubles with study English. However, in the academy they do not study speaking and writing skills hard as much as reading and listening skills. They will need some special instruction to improve their speaking and writing skills.

Through “To a daughter leaving home” high school students can realize parents’ love toward them. In the poem, the writer reminds the memory that she taught how to ride a bike when her daughter was young. Her daughter was dependence to her mother. The writer couldn’t take her eyes on her daughter because she worried about her daughter. Now her daughter is old enough and she is about to leave home. After study this poem, student realize that parents love that raise them with careful and always do their best. In addition, It could makes students decide to be a good sons or daughters.

 In addition, high school students could learn not only about the genre of poems but also some demanding vocabularies. The genre of “To a daughter leaving home” is a poem. The writer describes the situations or her feelings with metaphor. It helps students to perceive the genre of a poem. Also, they could understand how to understand the poem that use metaphor. Vocabularies in this poem is not too demanding for high school students. Some vocabularies are difficult but it’s not too challenging.

In conclusion, I want to teach “To a daughter leaving home” to high school students because it’s meaningful messages and It’s appropriate to students to study of it’s language. For these reasons, I want to teach to high school students “To a daughter leaving home.”
